Tools of the Trade for Budding Videographers

“The Video Room” idea evolved due to a whiteboard-style video we had just finished shooting for a client. The Instant Replay team was looking for new Channel Guide content, and since our studio was all set up for that style of shoot, we decided we should shoot a tutorial on how to set up the complicated lighting that such a video demands. I was behind the camera while Steve was in front of it, realizing it made a lot of sense to produce a series of videos for those who are new to the video production trade.

Thus “The Video Room” was born. With five episodes now complete and available on our Channel Guide, and with many more to come, the series is a great way to learn some tricks of the trade to get started on your own video work. Our current videos in the series cover how to light a whiteboard video, the rules of shot composition, and a three-part series on the basic camera settings you can tweak to enhance the quality of your videos.

We have a huge list of topics we hope to cover throughout the coming months, so we hope you’ll tune in and learn a little more about what goes into the process of making great videos. The practices laid out in the series are ones that the Instant Replay department follows in all of the videos we produce, and our goal is to help to fill the informational void for those out there just looking to learn a little more about video. Even if the video production skills taught in the series aren’t skills you plan to use in the future, they can still be a great reference for those interested in knowing why great videos look great.

    Cliff, educational videos are a great learning tool. I hope people take advantage of them not only to learn about camera techniques, but also to think of ways they can also use short instructional video segments to appeal to their own respective audiences.
