5 Steps to Launching Your First Product on Amazon

About 80 million people visit Amazon each month with (mostly) the intent to buy. Amazon gives you the platform to get your product(s) in front of these potential buyers who might not have heard of you. In this post I will walk you through creating an Amazon Seller Account as well as launching your first product.

1. Create your Amazon Seller Account

Go to https://sellercentral.amazon.com/ and click “Register Now” to start your new account.

You have two options and the only difference is the pricing structure.

It’s pretty straightforward. Do you think that you will sell more or less than 40 items per month? This means actually selling and shipping a product on Amazon.

If you think you will sell more than 40 items in your first month, choose “Sell as a Professional.”

  • The pricing for this is: $39.99/month + additional selling fees

If you think you will sell less than 40 items in your first month, choose “Sell as an Individual.”

  • The pricing for this is $0.99 per item sold on Amazon + additional selling fees

Then just create your account and add your personal information.

2. Research your competition’s Amazon presence.

Below are some questions to look into so you can have a better idea of the competitive landscape on Amazon. The more you can figure out here, the higher chance of success you will have.

  • What categories do competitors use to sell their product(s)?
      To find this, go to a competitor’s product description page and find it in the area highlighted below.

  • Are they doing Fulfillment by Amazon?
      Fulfillment by Amazon is where you sell it, ship it to Amazon for storage and then Amazon packs/ships to the end customer when its finally purchased on Amazon
    You can see in the area below whether or not competitors are doing Fulfillment by Amazon. If they are it will say, Sold by “Competitor” and Fulfilled by Amazon.

  • Are they selling at or close to the MSRP? Or is it discounted quite a bit?
  • Are there similar benefit bullet points across the competition?
  • Are there common themes in the wording/phrasing of customer reviews?
  • How many images do the competitors use per product?
  • Is there a common theme among the top selling products in your market?

3. Do Keyword Research for Your Products

Keywords are very important because they help people find your products even if they don’t know your brand yet.

Optimizing your product pages on Amazon is essentially the same as optimizing your website’s pages for Google. If this is new to you, I’d recommend this guide by Moz on how to do Keyword Research.

Next, use Google’s Keyword Planner Tool to get monthly search volume estimates for your keywords.

Then, determine which keywords you will actually use. You get 5 lines with 50 characters for each.

4. Create & Launch First Products

First, login to your Seller Central Amazon account. Then hover over “Inventory” on the top navigation and select “Add a Product.”

Next, you will need your product’s UPC code. Once you have it, you will need to either “Create a New Product” or type it into the search box and see that product has already been created in the past.

Now, assuming you selected “Create a New Product,” you will want to create and implement your product’s Category, Name, Description, Bullet points, UPC code, Price, Quantity, and Images under the tabs “Vital Info” & “Offer.”

Note: Depending on your category, your product will have different “Required Fields” than others – just make sure you at least fill out the required items.

For Images, just make sure you can locate the images on your computer and then you will just click “Browse File,” click the file, and then click “Upload Image(s)”.

Why are additional images important in Amazon?

Two main reasons: Potential customers want to see/learn as much about the product as possible and it makes your product page look tremendously better.

5. Decide If You Want to Ship Items Yourself or Have Amazon Fulfill Them

First, what is Fulfillment by Amazon?

Basically, you sell it and Amazon ships it. You just send your products to specific Amazon fulfillment centers and they will pack, ship and provide customer service to your customers.

Which is best?

It depends. In some cases, having Amazon fulfill orders is more cost-effective than doing it yourself but in other times it may not be.

However, you can always figure out which method would be best for your specific situation by using Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon Revenue Calculator with your own costs.

Ongoing Account Steps:

–          Set up your notification settings (Log In -> Settings -> Notification Preferences) and make sure you have the appropriate email(s) attached to your account.

–          If you decided not to use Amazon’s FBA, make sure to check your Amazon Seller Central account at least once a day as well as your email for any Amazon orders.
