I love reading stories like these: "We're all a-Twitter" via the Whole Foods blog.
Why? Partially because of my undying love for the micro-blogging tool Twitter, but also because Whole Foods already has podcasts, and is active on YouTube and Flickr and I am am curious how long these campaigns last.
As a way of increasing followers Whole Foods is giving away $25 gift certificates exclusively through Twitter. From their blog:
First, once a week we’ll announce (on Twitter only!) a store location, a start time, and a “secret pass phrase.” If you’re close to this location, go there, walk up to customer service and tell the team member the pass phrase. The first five people who show up will get a gift card and once they’re gone that’s it, so best to be quick (but safe!).
The second way to earn a gift card will be to tweet (making a Twitter post) about Whole Foods Market. Every day of the work week we’ll pick one Tweet that’s particularly funny or interesting and we’ll retweet it, direct message the winner and award a $25 gift card. Sound like fun? Let us know that you think!
That's quite a quest to drum up followers, and in the short time they've been Twittering, they already have over 1,400 followers. But like similar Twitter giveaways, people may only care for as long as the promotions keep flowing. Additionally, the question comes up if a more prudent strategy for companies to tweet as individuals (i.e. the Zappos route) instead of the faceless, nameless employee.

The promo struck me as kind of gimmicky, but it was enough to get me to take a look at their efforts on twitter and how engaged they seem to be with their followers.
I certainly prefer a name beyond simply the brand to identify with however and it seems like it would be in Wholefood's benefit to just name the people they have behind their social media efforts.
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post... nice! I love your blog. :) Cheers! Sandra. R.
