Behold the Power of Guest Blogging

By | August 19, 2011

We all know that inbound links can have a big impact on a website’s organic rankings. However, getting those  links – especially from authoritative sites – becomes the difficult part.

The sheer amount of content that exists on the Internet makes it difficult to create truly original pieces that others will want to link to. But, if you can find the right place for your content to go, you can turn an old idea into something new, shiny and attractive.

By “find the right place for your content to go,” we really mean locate guest blogging opportunities.

HubSpot recently posted a great article entitled, "How to Grow Inbound Links with Guest Blogging Opportunities." In it the author talks about why this practice has become so popular, and how to make it work for you.

To start things off, consider this: guest blogging is one of the most credible ways a website can build authoritative and keyword-rich inbound links. In addition, it can help build brand authority, foster relationships with others in your industry, and establish you/your company as an expert source of information.

So how exactly does guest blogging work, and how can you make it work for you?

The strategy  is simple:

Although it sounds easy, the tricky part is actually getting the right people to be interested in your information and willing to post it. It’s essential to make sure you’re targeting the right kind of blogs, as well as giving a personalized pitch to each one.

To get you started on your search for guest blogging opportunities, I’ve summarized some of Hubspot’s best suggestions for finding authoritative blogs in your industry:

  1. Think about top industry blogs. Do some research to determine which blogs are most influential in the industry.
  2. Use Google Blog Search to find blogs that rank high for the keyword phrases you want to target. In most cases they are viewed as more authoritative in Google’s eyes, which means their inbound link to your site will have more weight.
  3. Do your research. Most blogs have contact/about us information, as well as social media icons that will offer additional insight into what makes them tick. Get to know the blogs you are going to pitch to before asking them to do you a favor.
  4. Turn to social media. Twitter offers several directory searches that can help you find relevant people who are involved in your industry. You can scan their profiles for specific keywords, as well as get a measure of follower count/influence. Google+ also has a search feature that allows you to filter by different categories so you can find the exact people who may be interested in your content.

Guest blogging is a great way to connect with your target audience and build powerful inbound links to your site. Start digging around to find some valuable opportunities in your industry today.
