MySpace and OpenSocial Sitting In A Tree….

By | November 1, 2007

TechCruch is reporting that Google and MySpace have jumped into the open application platform bed together. Great! What does this mean to me? What does it mean to social media marketers?  Will FaceBook blush? Too soon to tell, of course.

Two observations:

1. People adopt their social media website, just like a group of  'friends'  for their own reasons. It is not like the Warriors and the Baseball Boys exactly, but these communities are appealing to users on different levels and fill different needs. The age-old adage of "know your audience" still applies, even on this day when technical barriers to users sharing apps are falling all around us. There are plenty of niches to be found and those who "get" those niches will still reach them. Those that don't will still be spinning their wheels.

2. I will go on record. There will be A TON of useless apps created and foisted upon me and you before the real good one strikes. But the best ideas will still win. Don't talk to me about Beta vs. VHS. Beta was technically superior, perhaps. But the market adopted VHS because it filled the right needs, so the market was right.  History will repeat. The most useless app will still be useless, even of it is easier  to expose more people to it.
