Welcome to “The Real World”-Post College Grad Life as a Digital Marketing Intern


“What am I going to do with my life?” It’s a difficult question every college senior has to answer. When I was asking myself this question during my senior year at the University of Dayton, I had no idea where to start. I was an International Business and Marketing major with roots in Pittsburgh and Florida. My friends, while in the same boat as myself, seemed to be taking positions all over the United States. At that point in my life, I could really say that the world was my oyster.

I found out about Fathom’s Associate Development Program through one of my professors. The ADP program had recruited from Dayton in previous years, and maintained a great relationship with the university. While I was hesitant to apply due to having to relocate to Cleveland (remember, I’m from Pittsburgh…#GoSteelers) I decided to be open-minded.

I received a call from Elizabeth, Fathom’s VP of Leadership Development, inviting me to interview for the program. I was both excited and nervous for the interview. Did I have the skills I needed to be successful? Was I going to be a strong interviewer? I was about to find out! During my interview, I learned about all of the opportunities that Fathom had to offer through the Associate Development program. If accepted, I would have the opportunity to learn every facet of digital marketing in a classroom setting, all while getting to make an impact on client projects. It sounded amazing!

I am both humbled and grateful to say that I was accepted into the program! I graduated from college in May 2015, moved to Cleveland and started working June 1st. The ADP program started off by giving us a high-level overview of digital marketing, and then allowed me to deep dive into digital solutions to gain more knowledge and a better understanding from industry experts! I had the chance to work side-by-side with industry leaders and make and impact on client projects.  Not only did I learn a lot, along the way I made great friends.  This was not a traditional internship. I wasn’t going on daily coffee runs for upper-management, nor was I doing mind-numbing clerical work. The things I learned in the Associate Development Program have helped jump start my career here at Fathom. At the end of the program I was offered a full time position as Marketing Coordinator for the internal marketing team.  Today I get to run internal marketing campaigns and promote Fathom.

Working at a smaller agency is great, because it provides a friendly atmosphere where you get to collaborate with others.  Agency life is fast paced but also allows for a lot of freedom.  Every day I am still learning new things and participating in growing our business.

Despite my initial stigma, the Cleveland area is great for post-grad life! Cleveland is not as expensive as New York or Chicago but still has that city feel. There’s always something to do, whether is it is going to an Indians or Cavs game to going out on the East Flats or hitting up the West Side Market, Cleveland offers a lot of fun activities.

Bridgett McClure is a Marketing Coordinator at Fathom. She is a 2015 graduate from the University of Dayton, where she double majored in Marketing and International Business. At Fathom, Bridgett was a member of the associate development program - a post-graduate program that covered a range of topics, such as search engine optimization, paid advertising, marketing automation, content marketing and social media management. Bridgett now supports the internal marketing team.
